CRiS - The Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme
CRiS has been protecting caravans since 1992. All registered caravans carry the CRiS unique 17 digit CRiS VIN die stamped into the chassis and etched onto the windows. A CRIS electronic tag is embedded within the bodywork for extra security which also carries this same unique number. The police and enforcement agencies have direct access to the location of the tag and the means to read the VIN programmed into it.
For consumers:
- Helps check the legitimacy of a used caravan before purchase,
- Identifies reported stolen caravans and makes it difficult for thieves to sell them,
- Speeds up request for insurance claims and cover,
- Adds value when selling your caravan,
- Provides you with a registration document and records you as the keeper.
If you are buying a NEW caravan:
- The dealer will register your details with CRiS,
- CRiS then records the new keeper details on its database and issues the first Touring Caravan Registration Document.
If you are buying a USED caravan:
- Carry out a CRiS check BEFORE buying,
- Inspect the sellers CRiS documents,
- Make sure you are registered as the new keeper with CRiS.
When a caravan is sold:
- The seller must complete the Notification of Sale section on the Caravan Registration Document and send it in to CRiS,
- The seller should give the new owner the remaining part of the document,
- The new owner must fill in the Notification of Changes section on this document and send it to CRiS with the appropriate fee.
CRiS is available by phone only on 01722 411 430. It costs £14.95 to check a caravan status on the CRiS database, and £12 to register a change of keeper. If you have any queries either you can either call them on the number above or email cris.uk@hpi.co.uk.
