Why do a HPI Check?
Are you are planning to buy a used car?
Then you should consider having a HPI Check done immediately.
But why do I need a HPI Check?
Just ask yourself, am I aware of the vehicle's recorded history?
Why? What could be wrong with the car?
In most cases there will be nothing wrong with the car you are looking at. However according to the British Crime Survey in the year ending June 2003, there were an estimated 2.3 million vehicle crime offences. You can't be too careful!
A HPI Check will tell you if:
- there is outstanding finance on the vehicle,
- the vehicle is recorded as stolen,
- the vehicle has been subject to a total loss claim (i.e. it has been "written-off"),
- the registration matches the Vehicle Identification Number (aka the "chassis number", or VIN),
- the vehicle is recorded as an import,
- the current registration is correct for the vehicle,
- the log book (V5) details match those of the vehicle.
Please remember that until you are certain of the answers to all these questions, you could risk losing the vehicle, your money - or both!
